Neighbourhood: Centro Histórico Mouraria
Between the Baixa and Castelo is the sloping maze of Mouraria, in appearance like Alfama but with less tourists. It contains a tangled street layout. As the name already implicates, it was the Moorish quarter of Lisbon in ancient times and is considered to be one of the oldest districts. The quarter is still today associated with fado. Originally a poor neighbourhood, this is now progressively changing and it is fascinating to be in the middle of all this.To listen to fado in this neighbourhood we can recommend the pub “Os amigos da Severa”. After just a short walk down hill in Mouraria or taking the tram 12, you arrive at the the Baixa area,which is on sea level.
